Pride Fest 2010

I hadn't been to the Pride Parade in a really long time and there seemed to be festivals happening every weekend. Feeling like I was missing out on the fun I took Padon, and Sophia into the city for Pride Fest and met my really good friend Nick.

-
A really colorful parade emphasising equality among people; particularly Gays, Lesbians, Bis, and Transsexuals, it was a parade your eyes couldn't easily forget. Knowing it was a really colorful event we put on our most colorful and fun outfits; Sophia rocking her purple tu-tu and sun glasses and we took the bus into the city.

It was a lot of fun to watch the Parade and listen to Nick give his commentary on the people in the parade and what some of the groups represented.

The parade started out with the "Dikes on Bikes" and while Padon was interested in the motorcycles he was so not thrilled with the noise and some of them were beyond extremely loud. I felt bad as he started to cry but this group was just the first of 180 "floats" and so we just needed to wait for them to pass. But once he got used to the sound his curiosity had him watching as his hands were clasped over his ears. I felt so buff because I had Sophia in the Maya Sling on my front and Padon on my right hip, held up with just my right arm so I wouldn't squish Sophia. I was amazed at how long I could hold them both - go Mommy!

When candy and necklaces started flying through the air Padon was more interested in the parade and then even more so as company after company came through with trucks and musical floats - Amazon.com, Starbucks, Mov'n 92.5, etc.

When we first arrived in downtown Seattle the Parade hadn't started yet but there were a group of people dressed as semi-nude super heroes rollerskating around and they were a riot! I especially liked this batman and was thinking how I could send this pic to Sarah without getting her flagged at work.

The day before we went to this parade Aunt Janet and Uncle Tim came to visit and Uncle Tim was expressing an interest in getting a tandem bicycle so that he and my Aunt Janet could still ride bikes together as her eyesight fails. This bike had 6 people on it, all peddling at the same time, while one of the (I couldn't tell who) steered the whole contraption. The front had headlights and was really cool. It was one of about three different types of really cool looking "scooters" that all seemed to emphasis sustainability.

As the parade went on things got racier and racier and for me that much more fun. It was crazy to think what these people must be like at home and that they most likely held normal jobs and seemed the standard when they weren't topless and jigging various body parts. The group below I especially wished Walter was there for.
And then there was a reoccurring theme of the Wizard of Oz and for an embarrassingly long time I didn't understand why there were and then I finally remembered that there was a stereotypical link to the gay man and Dorothy. And it made much more sense why about 4 groups in various adult Wizard of Oz costumes were going by.
I found myself starring unabashed at the nude cyclists and disappointed that Padon had fallen asleep. I was really curious to what he would think about naked people riding on bikes. Walter and I have tried to be very open about what body parts are called and acted very nonchalant about them in an attempt to help Padon not ever be embarrassed about his body.
Nick, Padon, Sophia and I stayed for about 168 of the "floats" and then decided we would make our way to the Seattle Center where the parade finished. As we were leaving two gentleman stopped to say how cool they thought it was that I brought Padon and Sophia and that it was really awesome of me to let them see and experience an event that is very important to the gay community. I tried to convey and "of course" attitude and they gave Padon and Sophia each a Pride Bead necklace. Cool enough, Sophia's necklace matched the Maya Sling and with her facing out and clutched onto the necklace she elicited a lot of "ooohhhhh, how cute!"s from people as we walked. The Center was packed and Nick and I walked for quite a while looking for a place to sit down. We stopped for a moment to take a picturesque Seattle Center picture in time to get sprayed from behind by the cold water and wind blowing through it.
Nick was so awesome and really tried to help me watch over Padon and Sophia as I changed diapers and pulled out lunch. He held both Sophia and Padon and Padon really enjoyed having him around.
We ended our time at the Center playing on the bronze Orca Whales where Padon tried out his balancing skills much to my anxst and fear. I like to let Padon try new things and learn from mistakes but as he climbed yet again up the dorsal side of the sculpture to slide back down I could imagine what would happen if he slipped and hit his face.

About 40 minutes into being at the center Padon crashed and just lay down on the cement. And then moved to the grass and just lay there.
Which made for a beautiful picture that I have got to frame.

I love how he looks like he belongs to the woman below. I'm not sure if the look on her face is for me or not.
It was pretty obvious to me that it was only right, at this time, that I excuse ourselves and that we go home so that Padon could have a real nap. Nick was sorry to see us go but joined up with a group of friends and went off for a drink. Sophia fell asleep in the Maya Sling and was so adorable.
When she woke she just kept smiling at me in that delicious, "I love my Mommy" way.
We didn't have to wait very long for the bus and even though I totally squished Sophia between myself and the stroller trying to get it up the stairs and then bonked her head trying not to squish her she was all smiles about 5 minutes later and I got the cutest shot of her.

It was a really fun day!

First Call to 911

Walter and I had another, and luckily rare, True Parent Moment. One where you realize you are no longer a kid and an adult and really responsible for another person’s life.

I arrived home to Walter starting to close the front gate and who reopened it for me so I could drive in to say he wasn’t sure where Padon was, that he hadn’t been gone more then 10 minutes, and could I help him find him. The front gate was ajar and Walter was pretty positive that Roadie had opened it because he hadn’t had the gate bungee corded closed. (Padon is allowed to play outside by himself but is supposed to stay in the yard). We checked the whole yard and rechecked the house and no Padon and no Roadie. So then we started calling Roadie, thinking well she’ll come and maybe she will help us find Padon, striving for some of her Border Collie genes to kick in. And at first she didn’t come and I could feel my chest getting tighter and tighter thinking, how can they both be gone, and then from the front of the house she appeared but in a way that seemed maybe she had still been in the yard. And we started saying all excited to get her pumped “Where’s Padon, Roadie?! Where’s Padon?!” Having played hide’n’seek this way in the past it seemed like a good idea but she wasn’t interested and wasn’t making any effort to point us in any direction, just jumped in the pond to have a drink of water. Walter then handed Sophia off to me and jumped in the car to start driving around our neighborhood. We had already checked over at two of our neighbor’s houses to see if Padon was over there and if they had seen him, which they hadn’t, and so I got on the phone to call them again and our other neighbors to say have you seen Padon? No one had and resources tapped I made the call to 911.
-
All I could think was did someone see this cute little tow headed boy running around by himself, open the gate and take him, because people do crap like that? And if not, could he tell someone where he lived and would he be outgoing enough to say my Dad is Walter and my Mommy’s Chloe (he does know our names). And I felt like such an idiot when the gal on the phone asked me what he was wearing and I didn’t know because I had just gotten home and don’t see him when he gets up in the morning. She was so nice to me though and just asked me to call her back when I had asked my husband and logged the ticket to the Sheriffs department. The coolest thing was, even though we are so rural, in 5 minutes the three neighbors I had called were in their cars driving around the neighborhood looking for Padon and a police officer was at our door. That was the absolutely coolest thing – I had wondered since we had moved to Stanwood, were anything to happen to us how fast would emergency services come to us; well the answer to that is pretty freak’n fast! And our neighbor across the street found Padon two doors down in the woods on the other side of our neighbor’s property. He was driving by and heard Padon crying. I was on the phone with 911 when our other neighbor brought him in relieved to see me and all of us with our hearts in our throats. I called Walter who was still frantically searching for Padon and he came right home. Even though I had told the gal over the phone that Padon had been found a police officer was still outside our house and I made Padon talk to him. He wanted to hide behind me and be shy, but I made it a point to tell him that the police officer was there because we were scared that we couldn’t find him and he needed to say thank you to the officer and our neighbors. The officer was so nice and asked Padon for a high five and spoke so kindly to him; he really didn’t want Padon to be afraid.

So the story goes that Roadie let herself out of the gate and Padon followed her. She went down the road and into the wooded yard two houses down. When we called her it took her a bit because she had to traverse back out of the yard, back up the street and into our yard. Except that when she came back she left Padon behind. That was as much as we were able to get out of Padon other then he will never leave the yard alone again! I’m not sure why he couldn’t find his way back himself, except I think maybe he realized suddenly how alone he was and I think he was really relieved to see and hear Rick’s truck which is very big and loud.

I told Walter I thought it was a ploy by Roadie to get this face smacking, body smashing, ear pulling, and attention hogging kid out of her house. That it was like “here kiddy, kiddy, kiddy, wanna go play in the woods? You don’t have any bread crumbs do you?” and then she ditched him to be lost forever, wahahahahah!

After this whole adventure I told some friends at work and the more I thought about it the more I realized that we all disappeared on our parents at one point:
  1. Patrick at 3 decided he would go to Andy and Megan's house on his big wheels, after my Mom tried to explain to him that we couldn't go and visit them (they lived in Oregon). Patrick got as far as Richmond Beach Rd, about 8 blocks (?), before he ran into a Police Officer who stopped him. The Police Officer then proceeded to walk a mad Pat back the way he had come with the big wheels in tow. My poor Dad came driving home in time to see this Police Officer walking his son down the street and when he stopped to see what was going on the Police Officer gave my Dad a piece of his mind and a lecture on parenting. Needless to say Patrick lost the use of his Big Wheels for a very long time.
  2. When Sarah and I were about 7 and 8 we asked Grandma Dempsey if we could go to the park, totally saying clearly that WE were going to the park. Grandma said "sure" totally saying clearly that SHE, my UNCLE STEVEN, SARAH, and I would go to the park. So imagine her surprise after she had packed a picnic lunch that she couldn't find us anywhere and after searching frantically with my Uncle came to the conclusion that we must have gone on our own (about a mile away down a busy suburban road on Long Island?). I still have guilt over the fact that by the time she had figured out that we must be at the park Sarah and I had pretty much played to our hearts content and were on our way back across the park to start on our way back to my Grandmother's house. Sarah beat me to the swings which is where she ran into my Grandmother who gave her a spanking in that "I'm going to kill you! I'm so glad to see you!" way. By the time I got there my Grandmother was too emotionally exhausted to continue on the spanking to me, and just yelled at us to get in the car.
  3. When we moved from New York to Seattle the mortgage company wasn't ready for us to move into our new home in Shoreline and IBM put us up in a sky scraper of an apartment building in downtown Seattle. One day as we were going up the elevator to our apartment the doors opened to let on/ off an individual and as the doors opened Jane walked off, in that independent two year old style, all Mothers of toddlers know and love. Only the doors closed before we could grab her and this building had more then 20 floors and none of us had been paying close attention to which floor the doors had opened on. My Mom started punching buttons as we could hear Jane screaming this paniced scream through the elevator shaft that had my Mom, and Sarah and I frantic, and soon it seemed we were stopping on every floor. It felt like 5 floors before the doors opened to a kind gentleman standing there with Jane in hand.
  4. When Walter was about 6 he was shopping with his Mom in a department store and met another little boy at about his age. They hit it off, were talking (and I believe there was icecream involved) and Walter just followed this boy around as both Mother's were shopping. Only when the boys Mother finished shopping and wrangled her 5 children together and took them out to the car Walter followed. Luckily for the parents involved the Mom took a head count after getting all the kids in the car and found she had one extra head and kid. Sadly for her she had to unpack all the kids to go back into the store to find the lost Mother of this independent little boy. Walter's Mom was frantically trying to find Walter and was beyond relieved when the second Mother brought him back in the store.

It has really helped to realize that each one of us some how got away, freaked out an adult, and that this might just be a phase. A phase that has me saying to myself that being an adult is so highly overrated. And when did I get old enough to emotionally handle this? It also had me realizing that you have to walk in these shoes before you can truly understand what the big deal was and why your Mom's face was contourting into the most amazing shapes and colors you had ever seen.

Sophia's Got a Tooth!!!

There is, really there is! There is a tooth in there! On Jun 24th we caught site of a little white nub'n and low and behold there was a tooth. As a parent this is almost immediately followed by a flash of guilt and revelation as you realize "Oh! that's why you had your hands in your mouth all the time and were so weepy over the last couple days..." Welcome Sophia to the road to Toddler Hood, there are quite a few more teeth to come over the next couple years, sorry baby.

The Best 3rd Birthday Ever!

I had a little trouble this year trying to think what amazing thing we could do for Padon's birthday. We had pretty much exhausted his love of Woody and Buzz Lightyear, and he wasn't expressing any love of anything specific. I knew we could just have a BBQ at our house with presents and cake but I wanted it to be an amazing day.
-
Well Greg had been writing Padon letters, of which we totally need to catch up on, and with the last letter Padon declared that it was an invite to a party. And not just any party but a “Painnie Party!” where they were going to sing “Happy to yooouuuuuu!” and dance. There was going to be CAKE (The word Cake in Padon’s world necessitates all Caps) and he was going to get “three, one, two presents! With bows on top!” This gave me the idea of giving Padon a “party” so big that he would be blown out of his Spiderman boots. With the creation of the idea stemming from the Baby Bug magazine that he received from his Great Grandma Chloe I designed a Birthday Present Treasure Hunt!

I have a pretty good idea of all the major tourist attractions in the downtown Seattle Area and thinking of the places that might wow a three year old I put together a map of 14 locations, at which 6 had hidden presents. I started it at the Seattle Center and ended it on Bainbridge Is. thinking that we would start where it was easy to park and end where Leo could join us. I then blew up to an 8x10 size each of the little pictures on the map so that I could hand them off to Padon as a guide to what to look for.

Wearing a T-Shirt that said "I'm 3 Today! Wish Me Happy Birthday!" we arrived at the Seattle Center mid morning and while waiting for Sarah, Greg, and Billy we went to the Mural Stage where we sang Happy Birthday and danced. This was something that was extra special because the weekend before, at the Folk Life Festival, Padon had wanted to go on the stage but couldn't because of the entertainment going on there.

We ran around the stage for a while playing tag and then I remembered that I had Padon's birthday card with me.

It was a Mother's Day Card but when opened played the "You've Got a Friend in Me" song from Toy Story. I had crossed out Mother's Day and re-written Birthday Day but this card was important because three weeks earlier Padon had asked me to sing that song and I didn't know the words. Here he could play the card as much as he wanted. He was so cute and excited to hear it. He took it, showed Walter, and then excused himself to sit by himself with the card which just cracked Walter and I up.

Soon Sarah arrived and we explained our plan to Padon and Greg who caught onto our excitement. I was so into starting off the day I totally forgot to take a picture of them when they found the first stop, the Seattle Center Fountain, and then found the second stop, the Seattle Center Monorail.
-
Coming up to the Monorail I ran ahead of the group and explained to the attendant that today was my son's 3rd birthday and that we were on a birthday present treasure hunt and that she was the first present stop. I asked her if she would be ok with wishing Padon a Happy Birthday when we came through and giving him a present. Totally confused by my idea I had to explain it to her a second time before, stil perplexed, she said ok. The prewrapped present I gave her fit perfectly through the hole that you hand money through and as we came up to the window she said to Padon, "Is it your birthday?! Happy Birthday!" and slid the present to him through the opening. Padon's face was priceless!! He was shocked she knew it was his birthday and even more so that she had a present for him. The gal was so pleased she could be a part of the process that she let all of us go on the Monorail for free. It was so awesome!
-
Walter and Sarah took Padon and Greg to the front of the monorail so they could really experience the ride and I stayed back with the strollers and Billy and Sophia. Greg and Padon were wowed by the ride but stayed very still in Walter and Sarah's laps. It is a little intense as it feels like the track is disappearing under you.
-
When we got off the Monorail we were pleased to find that Dad had come to join us! I was so glad that more family was able to come to share the day with us. We made our way, via the map, outside of Westlake Mall to where stop number 3 was. It was here that I told Greg that I could see on the map that there was a present for him. Such a sweet boy, he was surprised that at Padon's party there would be a present for him!
Greg and Padon found the West Lake Center fountain and stashed under one of the planters I had put Greg's present.

He was so surprised, which just tickled me pink, and he loved the bug hunting kit found inside.

I also had a gift for Billy who at the sight of the yellow bow on top got so excited and squished and squished it. Inside his gift were pink elephants meant to change color in bath water, but if their anything like the blue sharks that Padon got, they don't work. Sorry Billy.

Padon and Greg had a great time running around the courtyard outside the mall while Sarah, Dad, Walter and I chatted. After giving Padon his birthday present, an awesome Spiderman action figure, Sarah excused them to go home so she could get a little sleep before she had to go to work. I thought she was such an awesome Mom to make such a trek for a short visit and jaunt from the Seattle Center and back. Dad also said good by and we moved onto the next stop.

By the 4th stop Padon started to get excited and catch onto the process. And with a picture of the Pike Place Market bronze pig in hand he kept looking around saying "Nope, don't see it!" When we did find it, it was hard to pull him away and get him onto stop 5 which had another present for him.

While Walter kept Padon distracted I asked one of the Throwing Fish guys to give Padon a present if I brought him up to the fish, having explained again what my birthday plan was. He was happy to help and so I went and got Padon while Walter hung back with Sophia. As we walked up one of the guys threw a fish over our heads, which was so cool because I was hoping that Padon would get to see them do it. He was really wowed. The guy that had the present had gotten distracted, though, so we had to stop and look at the crabs for a little bit before the guy realized I was back. He walked up to Padon and said, "Is today, your birthday, happy birthday!" and handed Padon the present. A little apprehensive Padon took it and I thanked the guy a bunch for giving Padon a present. My goal was to express to Padon that these presents were coming from these strangers so that he wouldn't ever catch on that the presents initially came from me. While I was thanking the guy, however, Padon was licking the moisture off his hands after sticking them in the, who knows how old, ice. Gross! The guy was like, "eh, it's just a little protein". Gross!

At this point Walter, who was being really supportive of this amazing Chloe project, declared he was starving, and catching the tone I knew we needed to eat soon or this day wasn't going to keep being fun. Searching around for the best spot to stop Walter stumbled on a alcove with benches and counters and we had a great lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, animal crackers, and soda. I love that both Walter and Padon have almost the same expression in the picture below. Padon got to open present number 5 and found 4 blue plastic sharks to play with in the tub.

We navigated through the market, skimming over stop 6(a flower vendor) and took the elevator down to the waterfront where we ran into stop number 7, the Seattle Aquarium. Next to the Aquarium was stop number 8, and a present stop and 1960's retro looking fountain that lucky for me had been turned off for cleaning (lots of places to hide a present). You can walk up and around the fountain and so I dropped the present on the upper level where it looked like it was jutting out into the fountain. With help from Walter Padon saw the present and was quickly running up the stairs to get it. When he opened it however, and saw that there were socks inside with some print on them he declared they were Pia's socks. I had to point out that they were Toy Story socks and then he said "Ooooohhhhhh!" and got more excited.

It was about this time that Walter and I could see that the tables were quickly turning and we were loosing the happy Padon to a tired Padon. We agreed there were too many stops but kept on going. And happily ran into Jane and Jason who were able to come down on Jane's lunch break to hang with us for a couple stops. Onto stop number 9, the large wooden man holding a salmon was a lot closer then I remembered him being to the fountain but Padon was excited to find him and patted him a lot and talked about the fish as well as cleaned out the garbage that someone had stashed behind him. Gross!

With help from Jane and Jason, and moving like a herd of turtles we made our way to stop number 10, the O'l Curiosity Shop, where inside was another present, stashed by one of the two Mummy's as stop number 11. Walter stashed this one and got to lead Padon back. Miraculously in a huge crowd of middle schoolers Padon had no desire to look at or take anything off the shelves as he passed through the crowd to Walter and the present. Just as easily we made our way back outside where Padon opened the present to find a hard plastic elephant.

With Jane's help in corralling Padon I wondered what we did before she and Jason arrived. At this time Jane and Jason had to excuse themselves and we moved onto stop number 12 where there was a large cement sculpture of Ivar (as in Ivar's fish and chips) who was feeding a seagull. But as we walked up to it, there was a homeless man lounging in the chair that the seagull is perched on and we just kept walking by but pointed it out to Padon anyway, so he could see that he found that stop.
Stop 13 was the Seattle-Bainbridge Ferry and the last present stop. All of us were totally pooped, but still took the opportunity to stop for a moment and get a family picture taken. Padon's listening skills were just about completely out the window but we knew if we didn't do the last present now it would be even less fun later.

We lounged on the ferry benches as we took the 30 minute ride over to Bainbridge Is. and our last and 14th stop.

As we were getting off the boat Walter stopped two of the ferry workers that were getting off shift and told them about our Birthday Present Treasure Hunt. Excited to help, one of the ferry workers went in the 1st Mate's office and announced over the intercom "On behalf of the Washington State Ferry System we would like to wish Padon a Happy Birthday!" As he finished the second worker turned around and gave Padon the last present from us. Walter had been holding Padon under the intercom speaker and Padon was really surprised. We thanked the workers profusely and beat feet off the ferry as we were now the last ones on the boat. In the present was a Caterpillar tractor that talked when you pushed down on it. It was a great last present.

*I asked him to show me the tractor so I could take a picture, as I was walking and pushing the stroller at the same time. It was an weird shot.*
-
We walked off the ferry and onto our final stop where along the way we met Leo. The last birthday wish to grant was CAKE and the Bainbridge Bakers had some cupcakes waiting for us. When we arrived the cobble stones had red glitter almost marking the way. It totally topped off my day as being perfect!
The cupcakes were fresh right out of the oven and Padon was so excited to eat one that it with his Soccerball birthday present from Leo, topped off as a wonderful way to finish his 3rd Birthday.

We were so lucky as to have Walter's friend Chris meet us with his little girl Kaitlyn. We spent the last of the afternoon playing at a local park catching up with Leo and Chris.

Chris offered to us to stay the night but I had to work the next day. So I left Walter, Padon, and Sophia on Baindridge Is. and made my way quickly back to our car. It had taken us exactly 9 hours to complete the excursion; as long as our parking pass in the garage was for. So perfect, I drove home totally pleased with the day. I really enjoyed making Padon's birthday wish come true having danced, sang happy birthday, received presents with bows on top, had cake, and received 9 unsolicited "Happy Birthdays" per Padon's T-Shirt, and I hope next year is just as great even if it is something small.
